IMPLEMENTATION

Communication is a integral component of a PACS project. It is also critical that communication is enforced via proper project planning; especially for a critical "go-live" that is round the corner.

It is funny how organizations don't get it! Management teams work in silos and do not completely understand the true process keeping everybody in the loop; This is only one part of the problem. .

. . lately I have seen huge problems with problem definitions; mis-understanding the problem and attempting to solve a problem that was mis diagnosed! People should be trained on asking the right questions

Its been a while

I was not very busy

I was not traveling

I was not doing anything constructive

I was only going through the motions of managing my department. . .

Why did I not post anything for such a long time???

I feel like I have a lot of things to say about how things ought to be done.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that a good organizational unit is one that has a simplistic understanding of what happens in the department.

….. Too many words . . . .!!! I mean….KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!!

A lot is said and done about work flow in a radiology department . . . a lot more said than done actually.

I have noticed that vendors get so caught in the functionality of their product that they seldom pay any attention to the core requirements of a site. This is especially true for First time adopters of PACS – The original purpose of going “digital” is lost in the ambiguity of “functionality” provided by a new PACS system. \

My Top 5 must have’s for a successful PACS project

  1. A PACS ADMINISTRATOR with a solid background in IT/IS
  2. Eager Radiologists with active involvement in defining their workspace
  3. Proper Project Planning
  4. A radiology administration with a spine and a dash of foresight
  5. Solid support between IT and Radiology departments

More than anything else . . . interdepartmental cooperation and communication is mandatory for the success of any project.

I am definitely going to posting more from now on. . . .watch this space!

Thick Skin and PACS ADMINISTRATION

Development of "Thick Skin" is as much of an evolution step for a PACS ADMIN as the feature of flight would have been for the dodo ( . . .the extinct bird!!!). I guess, in all verbosity, i am trying to say. . . keep your ears shut, your skin oiled and your eyes open. . . for a PACS ADMIN cannot afford to get affected by a users emotions. There is a very thin line between observation and administration of a system. I am noticing that my job is getting to be as much about babysitting my users as it is about making their experience a profitable and productive experience.. . .and I thought it was about making my function obsolete( automatic).. . . . Hmmmmmm ( still thinking!)

Where do I start. . .

I now have my own blog about PACS and its associated headaches. I have flirted with the idea for a while, but my natural instincts as PACS Administrator ( critical thinking and analysis) have always told me that I was not "affected" enough to have my own rants and rave blog. I also admit that Dr. Dalai and his irrevernce to the trading community of PACS ( vendors and companies) have been instrumental in giving me the ammo to start my own blog! Thank You Dr. Dalai - You are an unnatural ally in the quest for PACSIFICIENCY ( PACS+EFFICIENCY)
